After today’s two rounds of matchplay at Edzell, the line-up for this year’s Semi Finals of the Scottish Senior Women’s Open are now confirmed.

In the top half of the draw, defending champion Elaine Moffat will take on Jennifer Bryans of Harburn Golf Club.

Bryans followed up a 4&3 morning victory over Sandra Jackson with another fantastic victory over second seed Allison Davidson by the same score line in the afternoon. Despite entering the matchplay as 13th seed after rounds of 82 and 79, Bryan is now one match away from a shot at the title.

Speaking to Scottish Golf after reaching the semi-finals, Bryans said, “I’m delighted with today’s results and the way I played. I’m feeling good about my game and there’s no pressure on me tomorrow.

“I played Elaine at Blairgowrie last year, so I know how good she is. I just want to go out and enjoy it. I’ll have a nice quiet night tonight and look forward to getting going again tomorrow.”

Bryans now faces the formidable task of trying to knock out defending champion, and this year’s strokeplay winner, Elaine Moffat.

Moffat cruised through her last-16 tie against Edzell member Ann Hay with a 7&6 victory, before progressing to the final with a 2&1 win over Iona McKean of Cottesmore Golf and Country Club.

Moffat told Scottish Golf, “I’m very happy to get through both games. I made a few mistakes but there was a lot of decent golf in there.

“I’m looking forward to tomorrow a lot. It’s a great feeling to get into Friday. I just need to regroup and reset for a new game of golf in the morning now.”

In the bottom half of the draw, Donna Jackson of Troon will face Aileen Baker of Crail for a place in the final.

Jackson reached the semi-finals with a 2&1 victory over Caroline Steedman of Murrayfield in the morning, before an impressive 4&3 victory over third seed Mary Smith of Tain.

Her opponent, Baker, who finished as runner-up in the strokeplay, narrowly reached the last- 8 with a 1up victory over Ellie Whyte, before another narrow victory by the same score line over Elizabeth Stewart in the afternoon.

Tomorrow’s Semi Finals will get underway at 8.30am, with Moffat and Bryans leading the way, followed by Jackson and Stewart at 8.45am. The final will then take place in the afternoon with a 13.20 tee off.

Defending champion Elaine Moffat picked up where she left off on day 1 as she secured the strokeplay title at this year’s Scottish Senior Women’s Open Championship.

A solid round of 76 in reasonable conditions saw her finish +2 overall and record a two-shot victory over Aileen Baker of Crail.

Baker posted the best round of the day, 75, to finish on +4 overall. Despite finishing strongly, playing her last 7 holes in -1, she couldn’t quite close the gap on Moffat and had to settle for a runner-up finish.

Speaking to Scottish Golf about her strokeplay victory, Moffat said, “It’s amazing, it’s still sinking in but it’s a really nice feeling.

“It was a hard game of golf and I was really aware that I needed to stay focussed. There was definitely added pressure starting the day with the lead, but in a good way; it made me stay on my toes. I didn’t play my best, but I made good decisions and I’m pleased to have got through it.

It’s something I’ve not won before so it’s lovely to have that under my belt. I’m going to enjoy the moment. I have to thank my coach Mike Rae who has been key in helping me to achieve this.”

On regrouping for the start of the matchplay tomorrow, Moffat continued, “I’ll go home, get all the gear sorted out and once I’ve done that I’ll just try and rest up and get my brain back in the right mode for another day on the golf course.”

Moffat’s nearest challengers at the start of the day, Sandra Jackson of Royal Dornoch and Alison Davidson of Stirling, fell away on day 2, both shooting +8. Both players will now look to regroup going into the knockout stages.

Last year’s beaten finalist, Sheena Wood, recovered from an opening round of 84 to make the matchplay with a solid second round of 78, keeping her hopes of going one better than last year alive.

The biggest leaderboard climb of the day belonged to Murrayfield’s Caroline Steedman, who bounced back from a first round 85 to shoot 76 today and finish in the top 16, having started the day in a tie for 34th.

The tournament will now move to the knockout stages where the top 16 scratch scores will progress to the matchplay, starting tomorrow morning with the cut falling at +14 after the strokeplay. The top 16 net scores from the rest of the field will also now compete in the net matchplay.

Defending champion Elaine Moffat made a strong start as she aims to defend her Scottish Senior Women’s Open title, posting a round of 74 in excellent conditions at Edzell.

Moffat, the highest ranked player going into the week, carded four birdies and two bogies, before a double bogey 7 on the last saw her end Day 1 at the top of the leaderboard on level par.

Speaking to Scottish Golf after her round, Moffat said, “It was pretty good, I’ve enjoyed getting going. It was mostly a good round with a few wee blemishes, but we won’t dwell on them.

There was enough good stuff in there to take home, enjoy and regroup for tomorrow.”

On being overnight leader and looking ahead to the rest of the week, Moffat continued, “It’s a good feeling. I would take it any day of the week, it’s a nice place to be.

“It would be an absolute dream come true to make it to the final and have another shot at the trophy, but I know they are all coming for it, so you’ve just got to do one job at a time and not get ahead of yourself.”

Going into the second round of strokeplay tomorrow, Moffat will start one shot clear of playing partner Alison Davidson from Stirling Golf Club, and Sandra Jackson of Royal Dornoch.

Aileen Baker on +3, and Fiona Hay on +4 will also be looking for a good second round as they look to chase down Moffat at the top of the leaderboard.

Last year’s defeated finalist, Sheena Wood, will be looking to bounce back from a +8 round of 82 which leaves her in tied-16th and battling to make Thursday and Friday’s knockout stages.

The 80-strong field will play another round of strokeplay tomorrow to crown the strokeplay champion, with the top-16 scratch scores progressing to the knockout stages, and the next 16 best net scores qualifying for the net matchplay.
