The latest changes at Skipton Golf Club saw the reconstruction of the two bunkers on the third hole.

The £3,000 required for this work, said to be the final piece in the jigsaw concerning the club’s newly remodelled course, came from funds raised by the men’s senior section.

Both members and visitors continue to sing the praises of the new course, launched last August, with two brand-new par 4 holes among many improvements now in place.

The major redevelopment work, involving significant investment, was necessitated by the Environment Agency’s Flood Alleviation Scheme for Skipton.

With home advantage proving decisive, Skipton golfers led the way in the club’s annual open day stableford competition, which attracted a solid 140 players, the majority visitors. (Sunday, July 14)

Taking top spot with 47 points were Robert Elliot and Lee Guilfoyle, two points clear of Keith Airey and Keith Roberts, while a further point behind in third place were father and son Guy and Rob Windle.

The open day, organised by the club’s Rabbits section, was sponsored by Cross Hills-based Skipton Volkswagen, who put up a brand-new VW car for a hole in one on the par 3 12th.

It was limited to 50 participants who had bought an entry ticket for the competition. And the elusive hole in one actually happened, though the golfer who achieved what is for many a once in a lifetime feat – and who shall remain nameless – had failed to purchase a ticket, so learning one of life’s lessons the hard way!

Rabbits section captain Roger Moore said: “This was possibly the highlight of a day to remember, with players enjoying the course at its best and in perfect weather conditions. Only positive comments were received about the whole experience – from arrival and registration, the course itself, right through to refreshments before, during and after the golf.

“Our sincere thanks go to the greens staff, bar and catering teams, Skipton VW and all members who helped to make the day the success that it undoubtedly was.”

An operating profit was made on the Halfway House, which will be added to the Rabbits’ 2019 donation to Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice in Oxenhope, with the kitty now standing at over £300.

Roger Moore is now looking forward to his annual Rabbit Captains Day at Skipton this Saturday, July 27, which will also feature the club’s 2019 Family Fun Day, again in support of Manorlands, from 12 noon onwards.

Roger describes it as an opportunity to sign up and play golf in the morning and relax in the afternoon, with lots to do and enjoy for all the family.

Because parking will be restricted at the club, a free shuttle bus is being laid on from the Town Hall car park outside the Three Links Club between noon and 5pm.

A brand-new VW car will be driven off by one on-the-ball golfer who’s skilled – or lucky enough! – to bag a hole in one at a competition at Skipton Golf Club.

The car is the star prize in a four-ball better-ball stableford competition to be staged as part of the club’s annual open day on Sunday, July 14, which is organised by the Rabbits section. The chance to win it comes courtesy of Cross Hills-based Skipton Volkswagen.

The hole in one competition will be limited to 50 entrants with a maximum 28 handicap and 90% handicap allowance. It will take place on the 138 yard par 3 12th hole, itself sponsored by another Cross Hills company, T.B. Construction.

The sponsorship deal was teed up by Rabbits section captain Roger Moore. It also includes sponsored shirts for section members.

Open day cash prizes will also be up for grabs for holes in one at any of the other par 3s at Skipton. Online bookings for the competition can be made at www.skiptongolfclub.co.uk

Skipton’s Lucy Eaton is pictured front left.

Skipton Golf Club is celebrating headline achievements by two young members who both progressed through the club’s highly acclaimed Junior Academy.

Lucy Eaton proved the inspiration in her American university’s ladies team that pulled off a spectacular victory in the NCAA finals in Florida, the top annual competition on the US collegiate golf circuit.

The club’s Max Berrisford has also made history by qualifying for The Brabazon Trophy, one of England Golf’s major championships and arguably the world’s top stroke play event for amateur men.

Lucy, 23, who lives in Skipton and has just completed her fourth and final year of a university golf scholarship in the States, was a member of the Florida Tech team, The Panthers, that pulled off an unbelievable finish to the season by winning the NCAA 2nd division.

Success was made all the sweeter, as team members had been shocked to learn earlier this year that the women’s golf programme at the university was to be scrapped after the Spring season.

Lucy commented at the time: “We all just had our mouths open in shock. No one could say anything. We were just all heartbroken.” Later that day on the team’s group chat, Lucy wrote: “New target acquired. Let’s go win nationals.”

The Florida Tech team channelled their anger and frustration into the kind of storybook run that transcends sport, finishing fourth in the Sunshine State regionals in Cleveland – considered to be the most competitive in the US. Lucy had the lowest score in any round for any player at 4 under and finished seventh overall. In the stroke play qualification of the All America Finals she came third individually.

The Panthers then advanced to the NCAA Championship staged at Palm Beach Gardens, before going on to land the Division II title on its last day of existence and for the first time in school history.

Lucy, who graduated a fortnight ago and extended her stay in the US while representing the university in the finals, went off in the lead match in the stroke play Matchplay final and found herself 6 down after 12 holes.

She then rallied like there was no tomorrow to put the first point on the board for the Panthers with a birdie at the 18th. It was a result that clearly motivated the whole team, as they pulled off a fairytale victory.

Bill Jurgens, Florida Tech Head of Sport, said: “The team has become inspirational. Their story is truly amazing accomplishment and Lucy has the right attitude for greatness.”

A spokesperson for Skipton Golf Club added: “This was an incredible result. Lucy’s performance in this five-day marathon has been extraordinary and she has absolutely led from the front. She was very much the inspiration behind the overwhelming result.”
