Ivor Robson, a man with one of the most distinctive voices in golf, has died at the age of 83.

He was the official starter at The Open for 41 years and his passing has been met with an outpouring of affection from players and golf administrators alike.

Ivor Robson, pictured at the 144th Open at St Andrews in 2015, has died ages 83. Image credit The R&A.

He also acted for over 40 years as the DP World Tour’s official starter with his ‘on the tee’ message delivered in his cultured brogue at famous golf venues around the globe.

Ivor sent the world’s best players on their way in a wonderful career – from Jack Nicklaus to Tiger Woods, from Arnold Palmer to Seve Ballesteros, from Tom Watson to Rory McIlroy.

Martin Slumbers, CEO of The R&A, said, “We are deeply saddened to hear of Ivor’s passing. As official starter at The Open for over 40 years, his voice was instantly recognisable and synonymous with the Championship for players and millions of golf fans worldwide.

“He was popular and well respected among all golfers who played in The Open and I know that they will share in our sadness at this news. On behalf of all of us at The R&A, I would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to his wife of 61 years, Lesley, and the Robson family.”

It was in 2015 when he announced his retirement, working at The Open at St Andrews for the final time, before making his emotional final announcements when the curtain came down on the DP World Tour season in Dubai in November 2015.

Ivor said at the time, “It has been a wonderful career. It’s been a great honour. The way I have been treated by players, officials, sponsors… thank you all very much.”

A much-loved resident of Moffat in Dumfries and Galloway, Ivor was born in England in 1940 and began his remarkable career at The Open in 1975 at Carnoustie. He went on to earn the admiration of the best players in the world, sending players off from the 1st tee with his famous words and a hearty grin.

“To the professionals, it has been great fun being here with you,” he added in 2015. “We have had lots of banter and it has been wonderful. You are a credit to the professional game. And to the spectators, thank you for your wonderful support over the years.”

For 41 stagings of The Open, it was one voice, Ivor’s voice, that marked the time.

He didn’t miss a championship or a tee time going back to 1975 and was also well known for avoiding a toilet break as much as he could between matches teeing off.

Having worked at his 40th Open at Royal Liverpool in 2014, The 144th Open the following year was Ivor’s last.

When he took to the tee at 6.32am on the opening Thursday over the Old Course it marked the beginning of a final championship for the iconic 1st tee announcer.

“I feel you can’t go on forever and if you’re going to step off there’s no better place to do it than here,” he said. “I’ve had some nice ones but this is special, St Andrews. It is just magnificent.”

Ivor said he would miss many things about working at The Open but mostly it was the people. “Being involved, being a part of a team,” he said. “I’ll miss that a lot but it’s time to go.”

A fiercely private man who enjoyed playing when he could at his beloved Moffat Golf Club, he was also a proud Rolex Ambassador.

Looking back to his Open career, he added, “It is a great honour to be the official starter for the greatest championship in the world. I’m privileged and immensely proud. They were all very special.”

This brilliant platform will undoubtedly help retain and attract the wonderful female talent out there to the golf industry.”

International Woman of the Year Award sponsored by Perry Ellis International

“Perry Ellis International, which globally operates and owns brands such as Callaway Apparel and Original Penguin respectively, is proud to be sponsoring The 2023 Women In Golf Awards through the International Women category specifically. Sponsoring this award and category made perfect sense based on our alignment with and endorsement of women’s sport – especially in golf.

UK-based leprosy charity Lepra, have brought together a star-studded line up from the world of sport, film and TV, to support the 98 year old organisation’s annual Giving Tuesday celebrity shoe auction.

This year, Giving Tuesday falls on 29 November. For Lepra, Giving Tuesday has become ‘Giving Shoesday’, an annual celebration of everything that shoes and footwear represent, for people with leprosy and lymphatic filariasis (LF).

For people affected by leprosy, the importance of Lepra’s specialist protective footwear extends beyond the physiological and protective benefits, they have come to represent the very rights, hopes and expectations we all share as human beings. They are a symbol of dignity, a symbol of independence and a symbol of freedom. Lepra’s protective footwear helps people to retain their employment and livelihood, to access education and healthcare, and to maintain family life and friendships. Costing just £6 to produce, even a small donation to the charity can have a life-changing impact of a person affected by leprosy.

Lepra’s protective footwear allows people to lead a life without the fear of prejudice and discrimination which still surrounds a diagnosis. They are custom-made at our referral centres and mobile footwear units by our specialist technicians, from a special material called multicellular rubber (MCR). Our modern footwear is indistinguishable from other shoes and sandals, with the wearer given the choice of different styles and colours. Choice is important. It is an important step in giving someone back control of their lives, at a time where so many are living in fear of their diagnosis and what the future may hold.

To find out more about the celebrity shoe auction and to watch two very special ‘Giving Shoesday’ video messages from the amazing Dame Joanna Lumley OBE and Danny John-Jules, visit:

Louise Duncan’s meteoric rise through the amateur ranks to major contender and professional golfer has been brought to life in a new documentary produced by The R&A.

‘Louise Duncan: Making The Cut’ is being aired by Sky Sports Golf at 8pm tonight (Monday 1 August) and can also be viewed on The R&A’s website as well as its YouTube channel.

The documentary goes behind-the-scenes on the Scot’s thrilling journey over the last 18 months, which saw her win the Women’s Amateur Championship in record-breaking fashion last June and go on to wow the home crowds and post a top-ten finish at the AIG Women’s Open at Carnoustie.

Exclusive contributions to the documentary are made by Duncan, former Women’s British Open Champion Georgia Hall and Dean Robertson, High Performance Golf Coach at the University of Stirling.

<img class="wp-image-9428" src="http://www.golfnorth.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/e6af5cec-5dbf-16df-990a-33c7fe6e692e.jpg" alt="CARNOUSTIE, SCOTLAND - AUGUST 22: Louise Duncan of Scotland tees off on the seventh hole during Day Four of the AIG Women's Open at Carnoustie Golf Links on August 22, 2021 in Carnoustie, Scotland.
Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of The R&A, and Louise’s mum, Alina, also feature in a unique feature on the life of a talented amateur golfer and what it takes to reach the higher echelons of the sport.

“I never tried to go professional as I didn’t think I was ever good enough,” admits Duncan in the documentary. “My dream is now to win a major championship, wherever that is. Doing it in Scotland would obviously be the dream come true.”

Hall, who played with Duncan in the first two rounds of the AIG Women’s Open at Carnoustie, added, “We had a lot of fun together. It was really nice to see someone so driven. She’s definitely one of the best I’ve ever played with.”

While balancing her studies at the University of Stirling and family challenges, The R&A Foundation Scholar has continued to progress – achieving a second Curtis Cup appearance for Great Britain and Ireland in June – and making her professional debut in last week’s Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open at Dundonald Links.

The promising 22-year-old returns to the AIG Women’s Open at Muirfield this week after her exploits 12 months ago when she was only two strokes off the lead going into the final round.

Robertson says in the video feature, “Looking at how hard she worked and the skills that she was developing, particularly with the driver, you could start to see her emerging as a real talent. Every night she would be here on the practice area until it was dark.”

“You see it in the way they perform, particularly the amateurs,” added Slumbers of Duncan’s rise. “When they are ready to step up you can see it a mile off.”

Duncan sparked a wonderful summer last year when she defeated Iceland’s Jóhanna Lea Lúđvíksdóttir at Kilmarnock (Barassie) 9&8 in the Women’s Amateur Championship Final – the largest winning margin in history – to become the first Scottish champion since Alison Rose in 1997.

The West Kilbride member then shone at the AIG Women’s Open to win the Smyth Salver as low amateur playing against world-class professionals for the first time – and is now looking forward to her own successful pro career.

The AIG Women’s Open takes place this week from 4–7 August at Muirfield, with tickets on sale via aigwomensopen.com.
