Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club – Established 1906

Two time Ryder Cup venue and UK Top 100 ranked course.

A testing championship course with first class facilities, S&A – as it is widely and affectionately known, was founded in 1906, part of the great golf boom around the turn of the 20th century. Inevitably the passing of so many years has brought about changes to the course, but the traditional feel of a championship links has been retained.

The club has hosted two Ryder Cup matches in 1933 and 1937 and a number of other prestigious championships including The British Ladies’ Open and The British Amateur. It remains a final qualifying course for The Open Championship and it has been voted by one golf magazine as among the top 50 courses in Great Britain. The course is a magnificent test of golf, especially with the sea breeze and profusion of heather and gorse combining to provide a challenging and immensely enjoyable day.

Complemented with a warm welcome friendly lounge/bar and exceptional catering, everything is in place for a truly memorable experience. The spectacular clubhouse creates a splendid setting for unwinding after a round. The main lounge and patio to the front of the clubhouse provide stunning views across the course, including the 18th green and 1st tee.

Members and visitors can relax in the comfort of the main lounge area which is split into the Lounge, the Ryder Cup Room and the Casual Bar.

S&A takes great pride in its catering and bar operation, with an experienced and friendly team on hand to cater for every taste and occasion.

The club’s memorabilia display cabinets and photographic archives are of real historical interest.

Treat Yourself To A Golf Staycation At Linthwaite House In The Lake District This Summer

With the reopening of Linthwaite House (https://leeucollection.com/UK) in the Lake District on 31st July, it’s time to treat yourself to a golf staycation in one of England’s most popular summer destinations that promises plenty of space and fresh air in the great outdoors. Part of the Leeu Collection, the stunning hotel has teamed up with the nearby Windermere Golf Club to offer a ‘Golfing in the Lakes’ package that combines a two-night stay at the luxury property with 18 holes of golf for two at one of Cumbria’s most delightful and scenic golf courses, and a three-course set dinner at Michelin-starred Simon Rogan’s newest restaurant Henrock.

The extensive grounds of Linthwaite House

Whilst England’s largest National Park is best known for its spectacular walks around its numerous lakes and up mountains like Scafell Pike, it is also home to almost 40 golf courses making it the ideal destination to combine hiking with a round of golf or two, with both activities giving visitors the opportunity to soak up wonderful views of the surrounding landscape.

Less than a mile from Linthwaite House, the course at Windermere Golf Club offers panoramic views over Lake Windermere and across to the distant fells. Founded back in 1891, the layout was designed by George Lowe who – at the time – was the professional at Royal Lytham & St Annes (which has hosted 11 Open Championships), a course he also created. In true moorland style, each hole at Windermere follows the gently rolling and rugged character of the local terrain to create a layout that is both charming and demanding.

Though relatively short at 5,143 yards, this par 67 course presents golfers with a quite a challenge thanks to an array of blind tee shots, several elevation changes and numerous natural hazards such as rocky outcrops, abundant brackenand copses of trees that run alongside some of the fairways.

The picturesque Windermere Golf Course in The Lakes

After the rigours of golf, Linthwaite House provides a tranquil retreat and all the comforts of a five star hotel. The Conservatory, Bar and Terrace are the perfect place for a light meal or early evening drink, while admiring the breath-taking views over Windermere towards Coniston. Breakfast and dinner are served in Henrock which showcases natural, seasonal ingredients in a relaxed and elegant setting.

That hotel stands in 14 acres of landscaped private gardens, which are dotted with arresting sculptures and offer a range of outdoor pursuits such as boating and fishing on the tarn (a small lake), boules, croquet and giant chess. At the end of the day, guests retire to one of the 36 luxurious, individually-designed bedrooms for a great night’s sleep in this peaceful bolthole.

Testifying to the quality of the hotel and its golf offer, Linthwaite House has been nominated in several of this year’s Luxury Lifestyle Magazine Readers’ Travel Awards including the Best Hotel for Golf category (winners will be announced in the Autumn).

The private lake at Linthwaite House & The Conservatory with views over Windermere

Keen golfers may wish to try several of the other golf courses in the area, such as the Harry Colt parkland course at Ulverston just 15 miles away and the highly-regarded Silloth on Solway golf course, rated by Top 100 Golf Courses as the one number course in Cumbria, that is located on the coast about a 90-minute drive from Linthwaite House.

The ‘Golfing in the Lakes’ package includes two nights’ B&B accommodation, a three-course set meal in Henrock on one night and a round of golf for two at Windermere Golf Club (with scrumptious snacks to keep you going and return transfers to the club from Linthwaite House). Rates start from £615 for two people sharing a double room; book online at https://leeucollection.com/UK or email reservations@linthwaitehouse.com or call +44 (0) 15394 88600, quoting “Leeu Golf”.

Royal Aberdeen Golf Club in Aberdeen, Scotland, was founded in 1780 as the Society of Golfers at Aberdeen and became the Aberdeen Golf Club in 1815. Until 1888 members played on the Queen’s Links close to the city before moving across the River Don to the links at Balgownie. The Course was originally designed by the Simpson Brothers, Archie and Robert of Carnoustie and later re-bunkered and lengthened by James Braid to ensure our classic links kept pace with the modern game.

The club’s ‘Royal’ patronage was awarded by King Edward VII in 1903.

Hesketh is the oldest golf club in Southport, established in 1885. The course is pre-dominantly links in nature and Championship golf has been played at Hesketh from the early days.

In addition to being a previous qualifying venue when The Open was played at nearby Royal Birkdale, Hesketh has hosted many other professional and amateur championships. Most recently, it hosted the Junior Open in 2008 and co-hosted the Amateur Championship with near-by Hillside in 2011.

The Club offers visiting golfers a series of open competitions including a weeklong golfing festival every August and a competitive range of golfing packages are available to visitors and societies alike.

Hesketh is also home to the ‘Golf Prize of Nations Trophy’, an important piece of Hesketh’s history that celebrates the exploits of Hesketh’s Arnold Bentley and Bridlington’s Tommy Thirsk who won the Baden Baden golf event played in association with the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games.

Whether you are an individual, group or society you are guaranteed a competitively priced golfing experience.

The Club’s bar and catering facilities are modern and fully up to date in a clubhouse that exudes our proud history, as you would expect from the oldest club in Southport.

THE owners of regular Ryder Cup venue The Belfry have pledged to donate to chairty their entire green fees from the first day it is able to reopen after the COVID-19 lockdown ends.

The golf course near Birmingham – which has three different courses including the Brabazon, which staged four Ryder Cups between 1985 and 2001 – was set to host more than 30 charity golf days during 2020.

But due to the coronavirus pandemic, fundraising activities and other planned donations have been cancelled or postponed.

The donations from the resort’s green fees will be given to a variety of good causes.

The charities that will benefit from the generous gesture include cancer research, heart, kidney and Parkinson’s, plus children’s charities, hospitals and hospices.

Trusts that support ex-sportsmen will also benefit along with The Belfry’s own two nominated charities for 2020 – the Matt Hampson Foundation and LoveBrum.

Belfry sales director Katie Niland said: “We want to share some positivity and support during what is an exceptionally challenging time for many charities, who rely on donations to survive and show our support for the amazing work they do.

“At The Belfry, we have the pleasure to host many charity golf days a year, so we want to take this opportunity to give something back so they can continue to help those who need it most.

“We therefore really want the first day we open the courses to count.

“The Brabazon, PGA National and The Derby will all be available to play and there will be some fun opportunities out on the courses to donate further, so whether you are a beginner, amateur or pro golfer, it’s sure to be a great day for some truly fantastic causes.”

The 54-hole complex at Wishaw, Sutton Coldfield, could host hundreds of golfers and has packages for 36 holes, including one night’s stay at the on-course hotel priced from £119.

As well the Brabazon, which also hosted the last four B&H International tournaments on the European Tour, the Dave Thomas-designed PGA National, which opened in 1997, has staged the PGA Seniors Championship on the European Seniors Tour twice.

As well as the newer inland links styled PGA National, the other course at The Belfry is the Derby – a more gentle parkland layout, which was designed by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas, and opened in 1977.

A good turn out on the first day of golf after the lockdown ends, could raises thousands for the charities chosen by The Belfry team, who won English Golf Resort of the Year at the World Travel Awards, in 2018.

The club is now actively promoting its historical credentials in an effort to ensure the much-lauded championship course receives the recognition it deserves. To support its endeavours, the club contacted prominent golf historian Neil Laird who believes Forfar represents a watershed moment in golfing history.

“It is the oldest 18-hole course in continuous existence,” explained Neil Laird, who set up the website www.scottishgolfhistory.org which attracts over 1,000 visitors a week, and is a member of the British Golf Collectors Society. “Forfar is the earliest example of Old Tom laying out 18 holes and therefore marks a milestone in golf history.”

He continues: “At Forfar, you have the beginnings of the idea of laying out a course where every hole is different – that is what people try to do now. Forfar is the earliest 18-hole course designed by the master [Old Tom Morris] that looks like a modern course. It goes right back to the very beginnings of 18-hole golf courses – Forfar was at the forefront.”

Although there are older courses that have either been extended or cut to 18 holes, Forfar was the first to be designed by a recognised architect with 18 holes from the outset; a world first also referenced in the book Why are there 18 holes by Peter Lewis. Established in 1871, the course was laid out by Old Tom Morris with 13 of his original greens still in play today.

Forfar is managed by one of Scotland’s most celebrated amateur golfers who recently had the honour of being appointed captain of the Great Britain and Ireland men’s Walker Cup team. Managing secretary Stuart Wilson said the role played by Forfar in the development of golf needs to be recognised.

“The history at Forfar Golf Club can be seen on the walls of the clubhouse and in our trophy cabinet,” he noted. “But perhaps less well known and less obvious is the important and historic role played by the club in creating the first 18-hole golf course by design. Along with St Andrews, Forfar was at the forefront of the development of the game and it laid down a template for future course design.”

Known for its unusual ‘rig-and-furrow’ topography, the Angus course has hosted a number of high-profile tournaments including the Scottish PGA Championship in 1932 and 1966, the Girls’ Home Internationals in 1997, the Scottish Boys in 1976 and 1980 and the Under 16s’ Scottish Boys in 2011. Next year it will again test the best when it welcomes the Scottish girls Under 16s tournament.

Despite its rich history, Wilson believes the club’s pivotal role remains relatively unknown. “We are very proud of the club’s origins and believe the significance of its historic role has been overlooked,” he said. “With our 150th anniversary in 2021 coinciding with the 150th Open in St Andrews, we felt this was a good opportunity to proactively ensure the club is appropriately recognized as providing a key turning point in the development of the game.”

Although the course went on to be re-designed by five-times Open Champion James Braid in 1926, it is Old Tom’s involvement that Laird believes is of greatest significance. “It is an Old Tom course,” he explained. “Although quite a few courses are associated with him, not all were laid out by him. In many cases, his involvement was limited to extending the course. Forfar is the first golf course I have been able to trace where he laid out all 18 holes. That is a milestone in the development of 18-hole golf courses.”

With Forfar due to mark its 150th anniversary in 2021, the club has embarked on a campaign to convey more widely its historical significance. One of the first elements of this strategy was commissioning award-winning golf course photographer Mark Alexander to create a series of images that evocatively capture the layout.

“The course is a fundamental component of the club not only because of its history but also because of the challenge it presents,” explained Wilson. “One of the first steps was to create a gallery of images that adequately captured the unique character of Forfar and Old Tom’s legacy. Mark was the perfect man for the job and he has created some stunning images for our campaign.”

Discussing his recent appointment as captain of the Great Britain and Ireland men’s Walker Cup team, Wilson said: “As much as I enjoyed my time as a player representing GB&I, I am determined to make a valuable contribution to the team as its leader and to help the players both individually and as a group. During my time on The R&A Boys’ Selection Committee, I was able to gain first-hand knowledge of the level of talent that was emerging. It feels like a natural progression to be taking on this role to continue to foster these gifted amateur golfers.”
