The first question usually asked about Loudoun Gowf Club is why “Gowf Club”? It would appear that the Gowf Field of Loudoun, so called as far back as records are available, was the private golf field of the Campbell family of Loudoun Castle and had been in existence from the early sixteenth century.

Golf or “Gowf” (the old Scottish word for golf) has been played on these fields for over 400 years.

It is believed that this ground has never at any time been under the plough in all these years. One can therefore appreciate why the turf at Loudoun is unique and probably among the finest of any inland course. Hampden Park, the legendary home of the Scottish national football team, was returfed from the rough along the road side around 1920.

Golf has been played at Loudoun since 1909 – historians suggest 1688!

The Jubilee Book, the history of the Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club, records Kilmarnock men playing golf at Troon in the 1870’s and 1880’s. The course was initially at Holmes Farm in Kilmarnock but this location only provided 9 holes, and on 26th September 1894 new land was secured at our present site at Barassie on the outskirts of Troon.

The clubs 27 holes provide a fair test to both amateur and professional golfers and many famous names have walked the links. Barassie Links starts with a relatively straight forward par five, drawing the player into the intricacies of links golf. The newer nine holes, opened 20 years ago, start at the challenging par three 4^th hole, and finish at the par four 12^th. The course is undergoing further changes on the Links with the walk from the 12^th green to the 13^th tee being replaced by a superb new par three. The short par three 6^th hole will not be in play, and the new 6th will be a par four running adjacent to the railway. The greens have the reputation of being some of the best in the area with the course condition a tribute to the greens staff.

Over the long history of the golf club Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club has played host to a wide variety of amateur and professional events, hosting among others the Boys, Ladies and Mens Scottish Amateur Championships and the European Youth Championship. The course has also been a Final Qualifying venue for the Scottish Open, The Scottish Senior Open and The Open.

Visitors are most welcome to Barassie, whether playing the 18 hole Barassie Links or the 9 hole Hillhouse course. The catering and facilities are excellent and you are sure to find Barassie a great day out. The club looks forward to welcoming you to the challenges of links golf.
