Seven year old Eddie Claughton from Oulton Hall is the Eagle Ace at Leeds Golf Centre

A seven-year-old junior golfer at Oulton Hall is celebrating after scoring his first hole-in-one … at a different course.

Eddie Claughton, a pupil at Swillington Primary School, is one of around 150 juniors taught weekly at Oulton Hall by coach Thomas Devine. And the tuition clearly paid dividends when he visited Leeds Golf Centre to play the 12-hole Oaks Course, holing out with his tee-shot on the 123-yard third.

Eddie, who has been playing golf at Oulton Hall for three years, won a set of custom-fitted golf clubs last year as a result of his performances in various events across Yorkshire. And, this year, he’s started playing with his father Peter, a three-handicapper, and has completed his first two 18-hole rounds.

Dad Peter explained: “On the Oaks he hit driver and it bounced and rolled on up into the hole. He was delighted. He doesn’t have an official handicap yet, but plays off 12 in the Tiger Cubs at Wike. He’s a big fan of European Tour pro Eddie Pepperell and just really enjoys playing golf.

“We play together occasionally now, which is great, really good father-and-son time.”

Devine, who is the director of Oulton Hall’s FUEL golf (FUture ELite) programme, added: “It really is quite an achievement to get a hole in one at seven-years-old. Congratulations to him. He’s got a bubbly character and always plays with a smile on his face. For me, that’s so important at a young age if we want to keep children in the game for life.”

World-class Leeds Golf Centre Hosts Internationally renowned Senior Masters Tournament – with a star-studded Pro-Am the day before!

England Golf’s club of the year – Leeds Golf Centre – is hosting the internationally renowned Senior Masters competition for the third time this June.

Tipped as one of the biggest events outside of the European Seniors Tour, Leeds Golf Centre will welcome more than 70 senior professional golfers and amateurs alike, to compete over three days.  The Pro-Am event will take place on June 25^th followed by the European Seniors competition on the 26^th and 27^th June

Nigel Sweet, Leeds Golf Club’s Manager, created this event three years ago and has spearheaded its success. No stranger to the world of golf competitions, Nigel has won four Leeds Amateur championships and became Yorkshire Champion at the age of 42 and finally turned professional aged 50.  He said: “The entire team is extremely proud of this club which continues to grow in stature year upon year. It has a great course, which more than lives up to these big events, and is the reason why we’re able to host the Senior Masters for a third consecutive year. The pros love it and will be visiting from as far away as Spain, Portugal and the US with the likes of Dave Shacklady (European Senior Tour Winner), Paul Streeter, Andrew Oldcorn (European Senior Tour Winner) and Andrew Sherborne all competing.”

It’s not just the pros who will be aiming for birdies, eagles or even an albatross or two, this event has also attracted the likes of former Leeds United footballer, Lee Sharpe and Clayton Blackmore.  There is a prize fund of £5,000 for the main event competition and prizes available up to 16^th place, so there’s everything to play for in this exciting tournament.

Keen to create a real buzz at the event, the club will be throwing open its doors to welcome members of the public to spectate and view this impressive golfing line up in the heart of the Yorkshire countryside.
