The first question usually asked about Loudoun Gowf Club is why “Gowf Club”? It would appear that the Gowf Field of Loudoun, so called as far back as records are available, was the private golf field of the Campbell family of Loudoun Castle and had been in existence from the early sixteenth century.

Golf or “Gowf” (the old Scottish word for golf) has been played on these fields for over 400 years.

It is believed that this ground has never at any time been under the plough in all these years. One can therefore appreciate why the turf at Loudoun is unique and probably among the finest of any inland course. Hampden Park, the legendary home of the Scottish national football team, was returfed from the rough along the road side around 1920.

Golf has been played at Loudoun since 1909 – historians suggest 1688!

A five minute drive from town is our seventh course, the award winning Castle Course which offers dramatic views over St Andrews from its spectacular cliff top location.

Booking the Old Course

1. Private Advanced Tee Times
The application window for tee times opens in August for play the following year.

2. The Ballot
The second and most common way is to enter the Ballot which is drawn 48 hours in advance of play (excluding Fridays as the course is closed on Sundays).

3. Single Golfer
Single golfers with suitable handicaps who wish to play the Old Course without an existing tee time should check in at the Old Pavilion on the day of play and the staff will do their best to join them with a two or three-ball group.

4. Authorised Providers of Old Course Tee Times
There are a number of Authorised Providers (Golf Tour Operators and Local Accommodation Providers) offering packages, including guaranteed Old Course tee times, throughout high season.

The Lodge at Craigielaw is a fantastic base to enjoy the wonderful facilities at Craigielaw Golf Club as well as exploring the golfing county of East Lothian and all the attractions of Scotland’s capital city Edinburgh. Attached to the clubhouse, the lodge boasts 25 well appointed rooms which can be set up on a double or twin format. 13 rooms enjoy views across the course to the River Forth, Gullane Golf Courses and the kingdom of Fife, whilst 12 rooms enjoy the quiet and secluded view across a decorative courtyard.

With an 18 hole championship links course, fantastic practice facilities, bar and restaurant with stunning views of the course you may never need to venture from Craigielaw, but if you do want to the Lodge is within easy access to many great golf courses such as Muirfield, Gullane and North Berwick. The county also has many great attractions and wonderful beaches and woodlands to explore.
