WALES Golf has encouraged clubs and members to stick within the new rules of play announced by the Welsh Government – due to come into force from Monday.

The changes will allow members of two households to play together – at the discretion of the golf club.

Single players can still play, but also two, three and fourballs will be allowed, as long as they are from a maximum of two households, in any combination.

Physical distancing guidelines and industry guidelines must be adhered to before, during and after the round.

Wales Golf urge all golfers to stick to the Welsh Government travel guidelines, which require local travel only – up to five miles.

Players can travel from England to play on Welsh courses, as long as they obey the local travel rules on entering Wales – which allow unlimited travel for journeys related to exercising.

Coaches: Follow PGA COVID-19 rules

COACHING by a PGA professional will be allowed outdoors and with appropriate social distancing.

It is recommended PGA professionals complete a comprehensive risk assessment and refer to coaching guidelines on the PGA COVID-19 Resource Hub.

Some outdoor driving ranges may be able to open, but all such facilities will need to work with relevant authorities and conduct a full risk assessment.

Golf retail shops are currently not on the Welsh Government list of premises that can open for retail purposes.

Therefore, they must remain closed. Golf retailers are encouraged to prepare over the next three weeks ahead of the next review.

Essential access to a building such as a professional shop for clubs that operate a booking system to regulate tee times, registration, and take payment, is permissible – provided appropriate social distancing precautionary measures are put in place.

Further information from Wales Golf along with club guidance can be found clicking here.

More detailed information has been sent directly to clubs, who were told to close by Wales Golf on March 23 – when the UK Government introduced the lockdown to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

WELSH golf clubs have been asked to wait until next week before considering opening for play for the first time in seven weeks.

They have been closed since the lockdown was introduced to combat the coronavirus pandemic, which has now killed some 32,000 people in the UK.

And Wales Golf has recommended that its 142 affiliated clubs consider waiting until May 18 – next Monday – to ensure they have sufficient safety measures in place before considering reopening.

A Wales Golf spokesman said: “We would advise that clubs that do wish to re-open do not do so immediately – so as to ensure they have sufficient protocols in place to adhere to these guidelines, which we will be on hand to assist with.

“This would allow for a managed and co-ordinated reintroduction of golf across Wales from next Monday (May 18) at the earliest.”

The advice from golf’s governing body follows a relaxation in the COVID-19 lackdown rules by the Welsh Government, in Cardiff, on Tuesday.

That followed the English Government’s announcement on Sunday that golf clubs could reopen for play, from tomorrow (Wednesday).

The Welsh Government – which has refused to drop the “Stay at Home, Stay Safe” message adopted by all four governments in the UK at the start of the lockdown – responded to Boris Johnson’s controversial announcement by saying golf clubs COULD reopen, if they wished.

‘Failure to comply could lead to more closures of Welsh golf clubs’

But Wales Golf has appealed for a further delay. The spokesman added: “It is entirely at each golf club’s discretion as to whether they choose to open, and, if so, when they choose to do so.

“Wales Golf would urge all member clubs and golfers to comply with the regulations in a responsible manner.

“If clubs or members are found to be in breach of these guidelines, then it could lead to Welsh Government introducing measures that force golf courses to close.

“Wales Golf will continue to work closely with the Welsh Government towards the resumption of golf in Wales – when the conditions are right,” added the spokesman for the governing body in the principality.

The Welsh rules – unlike the English – insist golfers can only make up a two-ball by playing with a member of their own household – or face playing on their own.

Wales Golf staff are on hand to assist with implementing regulations and guidelines and ensuring any return to play can be conducted safely. Email office@walesgolf.org if you require help or advice.

The latest guidance from Welsh Government on leaving home to exercise can be accessed by clicking here .

The following information has been taken from the Welsh Government’s website and it helps explain in more detail the regulations in place.

Nefyn’s famous Old Course – the back nine on the Llyn Peninsula has some of the most spectacular views in the UK – can open its doors for play under the new rules

Will golf courses reopen?

“Under our guidelines, golf courses are not listed as a business or premise that must remain closed.
“The regulations state that exercise should be done locally, which means people cannot drive to exercise outside their local area; people also cannot exercise with anyone other than a member of their own household.
“More than two people congregating in a public place is regarded as a gathering, which is an offence under the regulations.
“We are continuing to prepare for the future, working with our partners and stakeholders.
“We would expect Wales Golf, working with the R&A and other UK governing bodies, to monitor the situation in England closely where golf will be permitted from May 13 and prepare detailed protocols for a potential partial resumption in Wales when the conditions are right.

WEST Wales golfer Andrea Martin has received the Wales Golf Lifetime Achievement for Golf Development Award in recognition of remarkable success with Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire.

Martin – who is the Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire junior organiser – has helped players coming through the system, from those who go on to play for Wales, to those just playing for social enjoyment.

The award is recognition for a volunteer who has given an incredible amount of time, hard work and dedication over more than a decade towards the growth and success of girls golf within the two counties.

The Ashburnham Golf Club member was due to collect the award at the Wales Golf Annual Awards Lunch at Ryder Cup venue Celtic Manor. But unfortunately the event was postponed because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Martin arranges all competitions, liaises with club professionals for regular coaching, ensures as many players as possible can attend the events, encourages golfers of all ages to take part and caters for them with specific games and competitions for their ability.

She has set up a pathway for girls to progress from New2Golf into the county set-ups and hopefully Wales, used social media to keep everyone engaged, organised sponsorship and affordable clothing as well as prizes and trophies.

Having come from a teaching background, Andrea has scrutinised the safeguarding policy.

She has also ensured volunteers attend every course necessary to make sure the county is compliant with all health and safety requirements.

On top of everything else, Andrea also gets out on the course with the players to offer support and encouragement so every child has the opportunity to fulfill their potential.

WALES GOLF TELLS GIRLS TO SPREAD WORD ON SOCIAL MEDIA

“It helps to make it worthwhile when you see some of the girls who have come through the system going on to represent Wales,” said Andrea.

“But there is more to it than the elite end. The aim is to help all the girls develop, for them to enjoy it and to help clubs retain these players as members.

“Even if they do not get into squads it is great if they can enjoy golf and maybe give something back to the game. If they do then we have succeeded.

“Receiving this award is such a great honour and privilege. I have to thank several people, as well as our junior county sub-committee members who have helped me, during my time in the county, and are able to share this award.”

Role grew from club to counties

Andrea Martin started out as Ashburnham’s junior organiser before taking on the role at county level in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire

ANDREA Martin started volunteering as the junior organiser in Ashburnham, then offering to help out in both Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.

“I started helping out those girls playing nine-hole social golf, but who needed coaching to progress,” she explained.

“Thanks to Darren Griffiths, who was then the pro at Carmarthen – and Wales Golf New2Golf courses for beginners – we started some coaching for those girls and they started to improve.

“Then we started looking to help and involve girls in other clubs spread around the county and gradually grew from there.

“We had junior open days, a junior open championship and jamboree as part of the West Wales Ladies Championship.

“Once the girls started playing 18 holes then they started getting better and then they needed competitions for handicap qualifying within the county.

“Principality helped us to start a new structure and it just progressed from there.

“Now there are three levels of coaching. The elite squad all play in the county first or second teams and some have been part of the Wales Golf performance squads, such as Carys Worby, Megan Thomas, Kasumi Tran and Hollie Jenkins.

“We also have a development squad waiting in the wings and a future squad where enjoyment and fun are key.”

Award to be handed over at later date

WALES Golf director of development Hannah McAllister said: “Congratulations to Andrea on this well-deserved award.

“Lifetime Achievement says it all because she has achieved so much at Ashburnham, then Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.

“She has played her part in some players coming through the system to play for Wales, but also for many others simply to get the most out of and enjoy their involvement in a sport for life.

“We look forward to making the formal presentation of this well-deserved award at an event later in the year.”

England Golf Statement Regarding Coronavirus

England Golf – in light of the developing situation with the COVID-19 outbreak – has today issued the following guidance to all our affiliated golf clubs and golfers.

We fully recognise the need to adhere to the expert advice available and as such we would point all our clubs in the direction of the guidelines set out in detail by Public Health England via their website.

Details on how best to cope with the virus can also be found via the World Health Organisation website which will provide rolling updates and the best ways to mitigate against the spread of the infection.

NHS England also provide updated and expert advice via their website.

All golf clubs should note, act upon and continually monitor the advice and guidance issued by these expert authorities in relation to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

It is important that we all work together, following the advice of qualified professionals, in controlling the spread of COVID-19.

This remains a very fluid situation and England Golf will continue to take their lead from the government and public health authorities when it comes to safeguarding our clubs and members and offering practical and necessary steps to ensure the health and wellbeing of golfers and golf club staff.

England Golf chief executive Jeremy Tomlinson said: “The expert practical advice that is available from the health authorities and national government should remain the first point of reference for all our golf clubs and golfers.

“This is clearly a fluid and developing situation and we will continue to monitor events as they progress and pass on the relevant information to our stakeholders.

“By working in alignment with those who are specialists in this field, we will be able to take the necessary precautions and provide the correct measures to deal with the COVID-19 outbreak.”

Porthmadog Golf Club

Porthmadog Golf Club is situated only a mile or so from Clough Williams Ellis’ world-famous Italianate village at Portmeirion where TV series ‘The Prisoner’ was filmed – and Porthmadog’s intriguing mixture of heath land and linksland can be just as captivating.

Created at the turn of the century by James Braid, the genius course designer of his day, the course has two distinct halves. The front nine are away from the coast and although the soil is sandy the terrain is more accurately described as heathland. But it is none the worse for that, especially with the presence of water making itself felt on five of the holes.

The back nine head for the sea, and some beautiful scenery, and the course is transformed into pure links that have been likened to a miniature Troon. Certainly, there’s a lot to the locals’ claims that these are the most natural nine holes in Wales. None come tougher or more fascinating than the 14th.

Course Map

Called the Himalayas, this is a 378-yards par four that demands you drive over a huge natural bunker that hides the fairway from the tee. Following immediately after the scenic delights of the cliff-top 13th tee this will ensure a memorable round.

Porthmadog and Borth-y-Gest Golf Club, as it was originally called, was opened in the very early 1900’s probably being played by 1905. Numerous changes and modifications have been carried out since those early days when members were expected to pay compensation for any grazing animals killed or injured by them.

AMY Boulden will return to the Ladies European Tour in 2020 after winning the LET Q-School at La Manga Club.

The Welshwoman finished three strokes ahead of Argentina’s Magdalena Simmermacher and Scotland’s overnight co-leader Alison Muirhead.

Boulden, the 2014 LET Rookie of the Year, closed with a five-under par round of 68 on the South Course for a total of 10-under after five rounds.

The 26-year-old from Llandudno, in North Wales, whose career best finish in six years on tour was second in the 2014 Lacoste Ladies Open de France, had set a personal target of 12-under for the marathon examination at the annual LET Qualifying School.

But the daughter of Maesdu Golf Club pro Simon Boulden was happy with her score, especially after a week of changeable and challenging weather conditions.

Boulden said: “I’m relieved. It’s always a tough week coming back to Q-School.

“I decided to play a bit on the Symetra Tour last year and didn’t manage to keep my LET card from the six events in which I played, so I was always planning to come back.

“I love playing in Europe, but you feel a bit of extra pressure once you’ve had your card and then lose it.

“It’s a big relief to have it,” added the former Welsh amateur international, who played in the 2012 Curtis Cup a year after playing in the Junior Solheim Cup.

“I’ve done quite a lot of swing work over the last year or so and I didn’t actually feel like I had my game today.

“I know I shot a good score but my iron-play wasn’t quite there. I putted well and I feel like all areas of my game are getting better and it’s just about confidence now.

“Hopefully I can kick on from here,” said the 2008 BBC Young Sportswoman of the Year.

Simmermacher, 23, from Buenos Aires, will become the second Argentinian member of the LET after sealing second spot, based on the best last 18 holes, with her final round of 68.

The 2019 LET Access Series player said: “I can’t believe it. I hit the ball well all week. Every single part of my game was good and I just kept trusting it. It’s really exciting that I’m going to play a full season.”

Muirhead, who topped the field in Pre-Qualifying at La Manga, which was her first tournament as professional, ended with a 71 to take the third card.

The 21-year-old Scot, who lives in Dubai, said: “It feels amazing. I never expected this to be the outcome.

To do last week and this week and finish first and second, I’m really pleased.

“It’s been a long two weeks and I’m excited for the tour and feel like I’m ready to be playing.

“Today, I didn’t have my A game, but I kept it together and sunk some big putts, which gave me a lot of confidence coming into the last five holes.

“Amy played spectacularly and it was amazing to watch and be part of it,” added the former Fresno State University player, who won the Emirates Junior Open back to back, in 2015 and 2016.

The 2020 season gets under way with the Australian Ladies Classic Bonville in New South Wales, on February 20.

Hewson happy as earns her rights

BERKHAMSTED’S Ladies European Amateur Champion Alice Hewson took the final category 5c spot in fifth place on five-under to claim her full card for 2020 at LET Q-School.

Curtis Cup player Hewson, who played in the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Championship in April, said: “It was really good out there.

“I got off to a really solid start and finally started holing some putts in the middle of the round,” said Hewson, who had climbed into the lead after three rounds in Murica, thanks to an eagle at the 18th on the South Course.

“I had a couple of interesting holes coming in, but I stuck to my game plan the whole time and was aggressive coming down 18. I pulled it off.

“On 18, I had 200 to the pin, but I had a slight mudball, so I was between whether to go for it or not.

Hewson’s debut in LET Access WPGA International

“I decided to go for it and hit a three-wood about 35 yards right of the green, under a tree and over a bunker – so it was a challenging third shot.

“But I hit it to 45 feet and then nearly holed the putt, so it was good.

“It’s really special to get my full card, especially this year, with how many events the LET have got this year.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity and I’m excited to get travelling.”

Switzerland’s Metraux sisters claim their cards along with 14 more in category 8A

SWITZERLAND’D Kim Metraux, whose younger sister Morgane qualified in 14th spot, finished fourth on six-under-par after a closing 69.

Kim said that she had come to Q-School without any expectations.

“I have a status on the Symetra Tour, which gave me some relief that I knew I could play next year no matter what.

“It was good to be stress-free and I was quite relaxed during the round and focused on my game. It’s great to know that my sister qualified, too.”

The 15 players who qualified in category 8a include Surrey’s LPGA player Charlotte Thomas, Norway’s Maiken Bing Paulsen, Germany’s Sarina Schmit, Carolin Kauffmann and Sophie Hausmann, South Africa’s Casandra Danielle Hall and Monique Smit, Swaziland’s Nobuhle Dlamini France’s, Anne-Charlotte Mora , Pia Babnik from Slovenia, Filippa Moork from Sweden, Switzerland’s Morgane Metraux, Iceland’s Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir, Finland’s Tiia Koivisto and Eun Jung Ji from Korea.

Smit secured the 20th card with a birdie four on the second extra hole after a four-way play-off on the 18th against France’s Manon Gidali, Germany’s Leonie Harm, and Spanird Mireia Prat.

The top five players will earn LET membership – offering entrance into virtually all of the 24 tournaments on the expanded 2020 LET schedule which will offer €18 million prize money for the first time.

Boulden, the 2014 Rookie of the Year, is looking to regain her LET card after a year on the Symetra Tour – the LPGA’s feeder tour.

The 26-year-old from Llandudno, in Wales, moved into a share of the lead with a brilliant four-under 67 on the North Course, where she also shot 67 in the second round.

Boulden said: “Today the putts went in. The last three rounds I’ve not putted that great.

“I think it was the second round where I shot four-under, but didn’t make any putts.

“I played really good, but didn’t really hole anything to shoot four-under. Today, I didn’t hit it as close, but holed more putts.”

“I do really like the North course, although we are playing the South tomorrow. I do like the South Course as well. They are both really different and are great tests of golf.

“La Manga Club is amazing. I have been here over the years quite a lot,” Boulden added.

“I played in the European’s here years ago and have been here for a couple of pro-ams the last few years, so I know the courses pretty well.

“The complex is lovely, there are loads of places to eat, everyone is very friendly and considering the weather we had just before we started this week, they did an incredible job to get it ready for us.”

Alison Muirhead will be hoping to earn a full card by finishing inside the top five on Sunday at La Manga.

After a tough third round of 77 on the North Course, co-leader Muirhead was delighted to bounce back with a bogey-free three-under-par round of 70 on the South.

The 21-year-old Scot, who has been based in Dubai, said: “It was really steady today and I enjoyed it. The conditions altered during the round so it was good to keep it steady and hit a lot of greens.

“I just kept lipping out for birdie, so it was very nice to see the ball rolling close today and to bounce back, especially after yesterday. I’m very pleased.

“I’m feeling really good heading into tomorrow. It’s obviously another day, but I feel like my putter is working well,” added the former Fresno State University player.

“I didn’t hole as many putts today, but you obviously save them for the next day, so I’m really looking forward to tomorrow,” added the winner of last week’s pre-qualifier.

Thomas wants card to help in her quest for Solheim Cup place in 2021

THE best round of the day belonged to Charlotte Thomas, who shot a five-under 68 on the South.

The 26-year-old from Guildford, played for two years on the Symetra Tour and a year on the LPGA. Her best finish was second in last year’s ISPS Handa Vic Open in Australia, in February.

said: “I’ve played solid for the last three days and today I finally got some putts to drop and got some momentum going. I made some birdies, so it was really fun.

“I had a bit of a momentum swing on the ninth, because I was one-under through eight and then on nine, I missed the green from 90 yards and I chipped in for birdie and then I went birdie, birdie, on 10 and 11.

“That could easily have been a par or a soft bogey, but it turned into a birdie and gave me some momentum and I was able to carry it through. I feel like that was the turning point.”

Thomas, who has spent time living in Australia, having been educated in Singapore, has a full LPGA card for 2020 after finishing 71st on the Race to CMBE Globe.

The 26-year-old is at LET Q-School with a view to becoming eligible to represent Europe in the Solheim Cup.

“Last year, I didn’t have LET membership, so I wasn’t even in contention to be able to be picked for it,” said Thomas, who played for GB&I against the USA in 2016.

“I thought to myself, I better go and get my LET card and see what happens. That’s the two-year goal and it would be amazing to play,” added Thomas who helped University of Washington win its first NCAA Division 1 National Championship in 2016

“Watching it at Gleneagles, I was in Australia and watching it at 2am in the morning and running around the house screaming, so it was amazing to see that and so inspiring/

“It made me want to be out there and do that even more,” said the West Surrey GC member.

“I’m going to try and play in as many events as I can this year, to get as many points as I can. I’ll play a bit of both tours, LET and LPGA.

“The new LET schedule is amazing, it’s so cool. It’s so exciting and good for women’s golf to see that.

“I have played in a few LET events here and there in the past but to see that kind of growth is amazing.”

Charlotte Thomas target the top

Buckinghamshire’s Rachel Drummond, whose round included a hole-in-one on the South Course’s 12th hole, made the cut on the number.

She was one of 65 players at 10-over-par or better to advance to the final round.

Players finishing from sixth to 20th position will be eligible for membership in category 8a, which will offer entry into a lower number of tournaments over the coming year.

Players who have made the 72-hole cut to the leading 60 and ties and finished in position 21st and below, will be ranked according to score and be eligible for membership in category 9b.

Players that failed to make the cut after 72 holes, will be eligible for category 12a.
