The Royal Sportsman Hotel

The Royal Sportsman Hotel

Snowdonia dominates the views from almost every tee and course in North-West Wales!

This stunning national park of mountain and moor overlooks the North Wales and Cambrian coasts, the Llyn peninsula, and the Isle of Anglesey.

Golfers from around the world marvel at the array of championship links and challenging parkland courses within easy striking range of our homely 3-star hotel at the ‘Gateway to Snowdonia and Llyn.’

Our hotel in Porthmadog is centralfor historic Royal St. David’s at Harlech, nearby Porthmadog, and Nefyn, Pwllheli, Abersoch and Aberdyfi – among 10 local courses!

Some of these courses are often featured in leading golf magazines as among the best in Britain.

Nefyn – perched on a Llyn clifftop – is probably among the most scenic and nerve-racking courses in the UK. Championship courses at both Aberdyfi and Royal St. David’s – often described as the ‘hardest par 69 in the world’ – are immensely popular with golfers.

We are Porthmadog’s premier, full-service hotel and are still the most popular in this area – after more than 17 years – for accommodating special
interest groups from the UK, Europe and USA.

Each year we personally organise many successful golf tours for visiting guests, groups and societies of up to 30 or more. We hosted senior tournament managers from the Professional Golfers Association in 2013.

Our considerable local knowledge of courses, green fees and journey times – with navigation maps provided for each on request – ensures the most cost-effective and hassle-free break for you.

Every itinerary – including preparation of an outline schedule – is tailor-made for each guest or group, based on your needs. We find pre-packaged products may be inappropriate for some.

Completely free, we provide tee-time booking, club storage, a drying room, battery charging, secure parking, WIFI and electric-car charging points.

We have a traditional, friendly, well-stocked ‘gastro’ bar called Gelert’s with local real ales and brand-leading drinks. It can be open as late as requested for golf groups who dine with us.

AA and Visit Wales hotel inspectors say we have among the best quality, full-cooked breakfasts in Snowdonia. We are renowned for our food – perhaps the best meals within 30 miles of Porthmadog – with 2 AA Rosettes and a 5-star Visit Wales rating. We have special dinner, bed and breakfast rates for larger groups.

With 28 en-suite bedrooms – singles, doubles & twins – we can accommodate single or shared occupancies to suit every budget, all year round!

Our friendly and personalised service comes from being independently-owned and managed and vastly experienced.

If ‘other halves’ or parts of a group wish to do other activities, we can arrange separate itineraries to a wealth of world-renowned attractions on our doorstep. We even have exclusive money-off vouchers for many of the best-known local ones!

We are among the top three AA 3-star hotels in North Wales and have Trip Advisor Certificates of Excellence 2011-2015.

Historically, legendary Scottish professional golfer and course designer James Braid (1870-1950) – who won the Open Championship five times – did some of his best work in North Wales. The James Braid Golf Trail links 10 of his courses.

So, if you fancy playing ‘golf as it should be’, ours is a special brand of the Welsh game, on friendly and accessible courses. If you fancy ‘hospitality as it should be’, ours is a special brand of hotel – just as welcoming as the golf!
