Skipton Golf Club

Skipton Golf Club, one of the most scenic courses in the North of England, was founded in 1893 on the outskirts of the famous Yorkshire Dales market town.

2018, the club’s landmark 125^th anniversary, saw some of the biggest changes to the course in its entire history, with a revised layout and three newly designed and professionally constructed holes, including two brand-new par 4s, plus many other enhancements.

The course continues to offer challenges to all standards of golfers. It’s now a par 71 with three par 3s, 13 par 4s and two par 5s, including Skipton’s very own ‘Amen Corner,’ two holes to test any golfer.

Skipton Golf Club is renowned for its hospitality, a welcome typified by PGA Professional, Peter Robinson, who makes a lasting impression on all who come into contact with him.

The club continues to welcome new members of all ages and abilities – cost-effective and value-added packages remain available – along with a ‘Get into Golf’ incentive for budding golfers keen to learn the game, yet seeking both help and inspiration to do so.

Visitors and Golf Societies also remain welcome. Like members, not only can they enjoy the much praised new course, but also take advantage of a fully-refurbished, spacious and comfortable clubhouse, offering a full bar, great home-cooked food and stunning long distance views over the picture postcard Yorkshire countryside.

Upstairs is a smaller, more intimate and fully equipped function/meeting room which can, like the main clubhouse, be hired for private functions, celebrations and funeral parties.

In 2018, the club, through head greenkeeper Ian Brown and his team, was honoured to finish runner-up in the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association 2019 Awards for their outstanding contribution to the scheme to remodel the course, a project described as “incredible” by BIGGA CEO Jim Croxton.

Skipton Golf Club’s head greenkeeper Ian Brown and his hard-working team won through to the finals of the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) 2019 Awards for their outstanding contribution to the project to remodel the course.

The team was nominated by the club for the high profile awards, staged as part of BIGGA’s recent Turf Management Exhibition in Harrogate Convention Centre. It was attended by more than 5,000 greenkeepers, trade members, club managers and other representatives, who came together to network and share the latest education and innovation opportunities at Europe’s premier turf management event.

The awards were hosted by the BBC’s Naga Munchetty and both the Skipton greenkeepers and the club said were delighted and honoured to finish as runners-up in the 2019 Greenkeeping Project of the Year.

BIGGA Chief Executive Officer Jim Croxton said: “Congratulations to the team at Skipton Golf Club, who overcame massive challenges to complete an incredible project at their club during 2018. They are a credit to BIGGA and the greenkeeping industry as a whole.”

When the Environment Agency informed Skipton GC of its intention to build a 14-metre high dam across the club’s 16^th green and 17^th hole as part of the town’s Flood Alleviation Scheme, the greenkeeping team, led by Ian Brown, undertook to completely remodel the existing course with the ambition of making it one of the premier courses in Yorkshire.

Working alongside golf architect David Jones and contractors MJ Abbott and Oliver Sugden, the layout of the course was drastically altered to suite the land available and to improve upon the existing course. The project also saw the construction of a new maintenance facility for the greenkeeping staff.

Despite the cold, wet conditions at the start of the year, followed by the driest summer on record, Ian and the team were able to achieve their goal of preparing the course for its launch at the beginning of August last year to coincide with the club’s milestone 125^th anniversary.

This goal was achieved due to Ian and his team’s willingness to start work early and come in on their days off to complete work that included the planting of 60 trees and 200 saplings, and the growing-in of three new greens and fairway areas.

Former Skipton GC chairman Michael Hirst praised Ian and his team for their professionalism and pride in the course. “Ian leads with example and has been a tower of strength throughout the transformation,” he said.
