One of the finest heathland golf courses in Great Britain

You will find us in the East Midlands to the east of Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, U.K. We are a long established heathland course alongside the pines, silver birch and oak trees of Clipstone Woods within the legendary Sherwood Forest.

We are very proud of our reputation as one of the oldest and finest heathland golf courses in Great Britain and are currently rated 93rd best in the British Isles and 43rd in England. The course was intially designed by Harry Colt and subsequently enhanced by James Braid.

The English Golf Union, when staging the 2006 England Boy’s Amateur Stroke Play Championships, described Sherwood Forest Golf Club as being ‘in a league of its own’. As a premier course the club has hosted many national competitions over the years, including the ‘British and English Seniors’ and regional qualifying for the ‘Open Championship’.

A full eighteen hole true Championship Course of 6,861 yards (par 70 S.S.S. 74) awaits you with none of the modern water hazards but ninety four bunkers of local sand and long carries over punishing swathes of heather.

As a general rule we are renowned for our ‘most excellent’ greens and a long, demanding turn for home. Very rarely will your ‘second half’ score better the first.

The course record was lowered to 64 in 2006 by eighteen year old Darren Wright of Rowlands Castle, Hampshire, when triumphant in the Carris Trophy (English Boys Amateur Stroke Play Championships). A very memorable event and a name to remember for the future.

With such a treasured asset, the Greens Committee strive to maintain standards of excellence with their strategic long term planning. For instance you will notice our flock of sheep grazing on the outer limits devouring forestation which would otherwise impact on the course.

You will also be warmly greeted on arrival at our traditional clubhouse and the renovated first tee area.

The Nottinghamshire Golf & Country Club is an exceptionally well appointed and established club, having first opened its doors in 1991 when the Signature course was unveiled. The Nottinghamshire now boasts two courses, following development work in 1997 which took the Signature course from 9 holes to 18 holes, with the additional 9 designed by Peter Allis. This was followed by the creation of the Championship course, producing a 36-hole combined course – and to this day, this remains the only 36-hole facility within Nottinghamshire. Preparations are underway to mark the Club’s 30th Birthday next year in 2021, a landmark worthy of a celebration with the Club’s incredibly loyal membership base and local supporters.

Since Alan Hardy bought the Club in 2010, both the Championship Course & Signature Courses have undergone extensive reviews and transformation supported by world renowned architects and “Kimber Golf” including significant course remodelling, water features and beautiful landscaping. The investment at the Nottinghamshire is obvious whilst driving through the sweeping driveways to the entrance, alongside the perfectly manicured greens, and the approach to the state-of-the-art Clubhouse. The views are simply stunning from the Clubhouse, which also houses The Lakeview Restaurant, providing a range of menus from fine dining to casual lunches as well as corporate functions. In 2016, the addition of an exclusive Boutique Hotel on-site, where initially 18 rooms were uniquely created, launched “The Residence”, each room named to match the unique décor within. A phase two, extended the hotel to offer thirty individually styled rooms, resulting in the Nottinghamshire being renowned as a destination for golf breaks, business trips, corporate events, weddings, romantic breaks and mid-week breaks to Nottingham. Investment has been, and continues to be a key focus at the club, it prides itself on impeccable styling and five star facilitates

The Nottinghamshire is very proud of the inclusive membership base it has developed over the last couple of years and is supported by one of the largest lady sections within the county, if not the largest. Amanda Fletcher took over the Club as MD September in 2018 and has been hugely influential in terms of making its members feel part of something very special, by embracing all levels of experience and handicap with regular events, competitions and a ensuring a welcoming, friendly atmosphere.

Hollinwell – Home of Notts Golf Club

Golfers who find their way to Notts Golf Club at Hollinwell know they have arrived at a very special place from the moment they turn the final bend on the long driveway to the Club and see a magnificent view of the course and imposing clubhouse ahead of them.

Set in the gently rolling hills of North Nottinghamshire in the heart of Robin Hood Country, only 10 minutes from the M1 J27, Hollinwell is one of the UK’s very finest examples of traditional heathland golf in Great Britain.

Currently ranked as the UK’s 36th best course by Golf World Top 100 and by National Club Golfer as an England Top 20 course, the club continues with the widely acclaimed course and environmental improvements accomplished over recent years and may well rise further up the rankings.

Notts Hollinwell has held many prestigious professional and amateur tournaments and in July 2020, the club will host Final Qualifying for the 149th Open at Royal St George’s. With top UK and International players competing hard to qualify for one of only 3 places available, it promises to be another fantastic day for spectators. Entry and parking is free.

To celebrate, Notts Hollinwell has launched a new open competition for visitors which will be available online from December 2019, called The Road To St George’s and the first prize for the winning pair is incredible – a free round at Royal St George’s!

The club’s professionals have held Open Championship records and most unusually for a club pro, Brian Waites also played in the Ryder Cup. Mel Reid is attached to Hollinwell, Mel is a six times winner on the Ladies European Tour winner and a Solheim Cup player.

Notts Hollinwell has fascinating connections not only to ancient monks, Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest, the Ryder Cup and The Open but also to Charles Darwin, Sir Nick Faldo, Sir Peter Alliss, Matt Fitzpatrick and unique world records. Fine Golf rates the club as – “giving a 4 star joy to be alive feeling” – no wonder then that members at Hollinwell are very proud of their club.

The club extends a warm welcome to visitors from home and abroad. Go and view Robin Hood’s seat behind the second green, take a drink from the Hollin Well by the 8th tee that gives the course its name and soak up the atmosphere that only comes with a course that has a wonderful history and is truly one of the great tests of golf.

Our Course

Situated approximately 3 miles from J27 of the M1 north of Nottingham, laid out on over 400 acres of free draining sandstone. Consequently play is possible all year round making it an ideal venue summer or winter.

There are few, if any, sterner tests in England playing from the championship blocks with the course measuring 7250 yards and with a standard scratch score of 76 against the par of 72.

Visitors may play from either the white, yellow or red tees, the choice based on your own playing ability. The course still measures in excess of 6,900 yards from the whites (SSS 75) and 6,600 yards from the yellow tees (SSS 73). There are very few courses where play from the general play tees provides a standard scratch over the course par.

That said, Hollinwell remains an immensely playable course, and good golf will be suitably rewarded.

Scorecards for the The Course

Green 5493 yds Par 70 SSS 68
